Lower Primary Apps

The more I 'play' with my iPad and research its use in schools, the more I'm learning about how this new tool for teaching and learning can support children.  Below is a list of apps that I have found that might be useful.  I have also included a list of apps and web sites for teachers about using iPads in the classroom.

Fine Motor
Bubble Popper (FREE) - pop as many bubbles wrap 'bubbles' as possible in one minute
Bubbles - Great for fine motor. Swipe to draw bubbles then tap to pop.
Doodle Find Pro - tap on the hidden objects before your time runs out!

Literacy
Spelling City (FREE) - Create an account with Spelling City then enter your classes spelling list for the week. Use the app to search for the list (our class is 2GREEN) an load the spelling lists into your iPad. there are 5 games to play and a spelling test to practise. We use this one in our class rotations.
Phonics Genius (FREE) - great app for practising our sound of the week and reviewing those long vowel combinations. We use this one in our class rotations.
Word Wizard ($2.99) - has Dolch and 100 most frequent word lists to practise spelling. You can add your own spelling lists. Prefer Spelling City as you do not have to load the lists into each iPad if you are using a pod in the classroom.
rED Writing - Practise letter formation using Australian handwriting fonts. Great for Prep and Year 1. Does not include entries and exits.

DET Out & About - Sight words kit - Level 1
WordSearchTap or slide to select words.
Wurdle - Unscramble the letters to make words puzzle. Tap and drag the letters to make a word. You have a time limit. Shake the board up to make new letters. ($1.99)
Grammar 1 - Practise basic parts of speech ranging from subject nouns, adjectives, adverbs and articles. ($0.99)
Chicktonary (One of my favourites) - Word game. Unscramble a roost full of letters and create as many words as possible.
Word Magic - Have fun with words and spelling.
Montessori Crosswords - Teach and learn spelling with phonics-enabled alphabet and 300 words for children.
ABC Sight Words Writing - Practice writing sight words from the Dolch sight word list. Does not use Queensland beginners alphabet.
ABC Phonics - Letter flash cards. Links to Jolly Phonics. Auto of word, spelling, animal sounds and phonetic sounds of each letter in word. Focus on letter recognition plus 2 games - sight word recognition, and letters and sound recognition.

Story Writing - different apps for creating stories

Sock Puppets
PonicPics ($2.99) - Create a story using your holiday photographs or downloaded images. Record your commentary to complete the story.

Matching
AniMatch - Pair matching game using animal pictures and sound effects. 3 levels of difficulty.

Maths
Zoom - zoom up and down the number line to put the numbers in the correct place
Telling Time Analogue and Telling Time Digital - can be set for the appropriate year level i.e. o'clock and half past only etc.
Tangram - different levels of tangrams to make
Doll House Math - Practise your number facts to earn points to decorate your virtual doll house.
100's Board - Show and hide numbers to 100. ($1.99)
Hungry Fish - A favourite in our class! Quickly add numbers together to feed your fish. If you don't feed it fast enough it gets smaller. Similar to Super 7 DH.
Math Bingo - A favourite in our class! Practise your addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
Maths Frogs - Feed the frogs along the number line.
Splash Math Grade 2  - A favourite in our class! Different maths activities. Change the settings so that the game does not include money as it is an American game.
Motion Math Zoom - Zoom through the number line, adding the missing numbers. 6 levels available for free.
Tangram XL Free - Solve tangram puzzles.
Arithmaroo 1 - "A counting maths game for kids" Fun counting game with 4 levels of difficulty -Using numbers 1 to 50'
Counting Ants - Plays animations for numbers 1 to 10 to reinforce connection between number and concept.
Counting Bear - Counting app that teaches numbers 1-20. Counts out numbers as objects are touched. Audio can be recorded to play counting with familiar voice. Add your own pictures of items to be counted.
Whizzit 123 - Fun counting game with music, sound effects and animations. Teaches numbers up to 20'
Math Puppy - Bingo and Math challenge for kids - cost 0.99
Super 7 HD - Draw lines to connect and combine disks to total 7. Great for thinking skills!

Creativity
Halftone - make comics out of your photographs
Puppet Pals HD - Create your own unique shows with animation and audio in real time. Great for developing story telling skills.
Kid Animation - draw your own animation. A bit like creating a flip animation using pencil and paper.
iAnimator - Create Stop Motion animation.
Animation HD - like Kid Animation but harder to use.

AppStart - a great app to start finding about about how to use an iPad
AppShopper - Keeps you up to date on the newest App Store apps, sales and freebies. Apps are sorted by price, type, device and category.  There is an Education category. Lets you know when Apps become free or are on special.
Sticky Notes - as the name implies -- sticky notes on you iPad
Pages - like Word.  Files transfer to your PC/Mac through iTunes
Numbers - like Excel
Keynote - like Powerpoint. Great because with other apps and the camera you can create wonderful multimodal texts in no time, without having to transfer images between your camera/video device and the computer.
The Australian Curriculum - mobile National Curriculum. Easy to use.
Splashtop remote - ($.99) Connect to your laptop (connected to the IWB - you will need to download Splashtop to your PC or Mac) through the Wi-Fi network and have your IWB displayed on your iPad. Then use your iPad to interact remotely with your PC/Mac and the IWB. Great app!
