Reading (nightly must do)
In order for children to become fluent and confident readers, they need to be provided with opportunities to read aloud on a regular basis. In our classroom, children are responsible for changing their home readers on a daily basis and recording their reading in the take home Reading Log. For every 25 books they read, they will receive a certificate. If you need information about how to read with your child, please look at Reading with your child.
Reading strategies - What do we do when reading?
Spelling (nightly must do)
At the beginning of each term Year 2 complete a special spelling test to evaluate the spelling stage of each child. This tests your child's knowledge of how words are spelt and was not about getting all the words correct. The children are then grouped by spelling ability and given words to reflect this. Each week all the children will be given the same eighteen base words and their own special words related to their spelling ability. The 18 base spelling words are available on Spelling City and I will Tweet when they are available. The base words consist of ten spelling pattern words, six sight words and two maths words.
Spelling words will be given out on Monday and tested on Friday. They need to look, say, cover, write and check their spelling every night. Research indicates that this is the best method of learning spelling words. Your child should not write their words out four times on one night to get it done quickly, neither should they just copy them without using 'look, say, cover, write and check'. If you are unsure how to do this please read Look Say Cover Write Check. If you have any questions about spelling, please do not hesitate to email me.
Word Search (can do)
This is a great way to practise your spelling words and I have found in the past that children really enjoy this activity. If you want to create a word search using the spelling or sight words, go to Puzzlemaker. Key in the words and print out your very own word search. Then find the words. Don't forget to glue it into your homework book to show me!
Maths (weekly must do)
I will be putting up activities in Studyladder as homework. These activities are meant to revise current concepts being learnt or revisited in the classroom and are not an extension activity.
In Studyladder, everyone has their own log in and this is glued inside their homework book. Children need to complete the set tasks before playing with the other activities available on the web site. I will be able to monitor your child's progress on the website and see if they are doing their Studyladder homework. If your child does not have access to the Internet at home, please let me know that I can allow them to complete the activities at school.
To print from Studyladder do not use the print option in your browser. Click on the print option within Studyladder that comes up in the Studyladder document.
Fun games to play at home (These are a "can do" and will not be marked.)
These games support our current class concepts. Previous online games can be found in Games for home.
Create your own worksheets in Worksheet Works. Try the Word Problems in Maths or Secret Map in Puzzles.
Card games
Over the term, I will be adding games to practise and revise number facts. I have used these games in the past with Year 2 and the children enjoyed playing them, particularly with an adult. All that you need to play them is a deck of cards with the picture cards removed. Why not play them as part of the Homework Grid - Play a game with an adult?
